Who will be my MP in… Brent West

Millions of voters in London will go to the polls on July 4 to elect a new government. The Standard looks at the key battleground and other places in the capital and has published an interactive map.

Here we turn on the spotlight:

BRENT WEST

Candidates for the main parties (in alphabetical order):

Ian Collier – Reform UK

Bastôn De’Medici-Jaguar – Green

Barry Gardiner – Work

Paul Lorber – Liberal Democrat

Sushil Rapatwar – Conservatives

Summary: Encompassing England’s national football stadium Wembley, Brent West is a new constituency which is highly multicultural and endures relatively high levels of deprivation.

It is safe Labor territory and should safely return Barry Gardiner, who was part of Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet, to the Commons.

Sections: Alperton; Barnhill; Kenton; Northwick Park; Preston; Sudbury; Tokyo; Wembley Central; Wembley Hill; Wembley Park.

Impact of boundary changes: The new constituency absorbed parts of two of the abolished ones: Brent North and Brent Central. Of its 10 wards, only Kenton voted Conservative in 2019 – and even that will join the Labor tide this time.

YouGov MRP poll prediction: Retention of work.

Standard evening view: Mr Gardiner has represented the old seat of Brent North since Labour’s 1997 landslide and is a shoo-in for the new seat.

This is despite unwanted publicity from an ongoing tribunal involving Christine Lee, a lawyer and donor to Mr Gardiner, who is accused by MI5 of working for the Chinese government.
