Former favorite says Rohan Smith is “doing a good job” at Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos manager Rohan Smith has faced criticism numerous times this season. This peaked after Leeds’ narrow Super League win against strugglers Hull FC when the traveling support sections scandal for Smith’s dismissal.

However, a comfortable win over London Broncos eased the pressure somewhat. Smith made the decision to go with Jack Sinfield instead of the experienced Matt Frawley. The Rhinos therefore looked more coherent in attack.

Now a former Leeds fans’ favorite has given his thoughts on Smith’s time in charge at Headingley.

Matt Adamson is still a keen Rhinos fan from afar, having represented the club between 2002 and 2004. He ended his time at the club with a grand final ring as Leeds beat Bradford at Old Trafford.

Adamson is not following the story surrounding Smith, believing the young Australian coach is on course for success at the eight-time Super League champions despite recent struggles.

Speaking exclusively to Serious About Rugby League, former Rhinos forward Adamson gave his thoughts on Smith’s performance as Leeds head coach. Adamson believes Smith will ultimately be a success if Leeds stick with him.

“I think Rohan will be careful to make sure the performance improves as time goes on,” Adamson said. “There are some key elements to that team. There are key personnel (missing) in key positions.

“They’re still trying to find that balance right now. Rohan is a very intelligent, intelligent, young and innovative coach. I tend to think he’s doing a good job at the moment. He will continue to do a good job.”

Adamson would continue to maintain that Rohan Smith has all the tools at his disposal, provided his side are more fortunate with injuries – the Rhinos have been plagued by them so far this season with the current number of names unavailable, including David Fusitu’a , Harry. Newman, Brodie Croft, James Bentley and youngsters Morgan Gannon and Riley Lumb among others.

Former Rhino Adamson explained: “It’s a good team, it’s a young team, there’s key personnel (missing), they’re probably just trying to get some combinations going but they’ll be there at the end of the year. “

Leeds managed to do so in Rohan’s first campaign in charge when he took charge of the club, finishing 11th in the table before reaching the grand final, only to miss out on St Helens. Rhinos fans will be hoping something similar can happen this year, however, it’s easy to forget they are just one win away from the play-offs.

Adamson went on to reminisce about his time at Headingley. He revealed his enduring love for the club’s fan base. He always wants the club to succeed after enjoying three years with the Rhinos.

“I don’t think there are any bigger fans in the game than Leeds Rhinos fans, I adore them and I love them. I love the club, I love Gary, I admire him, everybody knows that, as I’ve talked about it before in different stories and things.

“I always want that club to do well. I always want to see them succeed, I want to see them be successful.”

Despite this love for the Rhinos, Adamson also shares a love for the coach and explained that he would be more than happy to take up an opportunity in England at a different team to his beloved Leeds Rhinos.

To that point, he said, “Opportunities don’t always come, but if another opportunity came, then I’d love the opportunity to give it a crack.”
