Scenes from the Hollywood Bowl that everyone will remember from growing up in Liverpool in the 90s

When you think of Edge Lane Retail Park, memories made at the Hollywood Bowl are likely to come to mind.

Attracting thousands of children from across Merseyside and beyond, it was also a venue for many first dates, birthday parties and weekends away. Yesterday, the ECHO reported how Liverpool’s Edge Lane retail park will be expanded in an £11 million project that will see the Hollywood Bowl completely redeveloped.

The development will see the Hollywood Bowl facility reconfigured and completely renovated to create a new 35,000 square foot bowling and leisure facility with a new 20-year lease. Following the announcement, we’ve revisited our archives to look at the early days of his popular bowling before starting this new chapter.

When it first opened in May 1990, the purpose-built ten-pin bowling alley had a 1950s American theme and included an American-style restaurant and bar, a sweet shop, satellite TV, tables billiards and snooker. That month, 97 pupils from St Mathew’s Junior School, Clubmoor, were invited by bosses to sample the new attraction, as seen in these photos below.

Some images also give a glimpse of the site before it was opened as work was underway. Here, we take a look back at the newly opened Hollywood Bowl at Edge Lane Shopping Park in 1990.
