Charlton Athletic open talks with Birmingham City’s Ruddy

Charlton Athletic and Birmingham City will both be playing League One football next season.

The Addicks finished 16th in the third tier last time out and this is Nathan Jones’ first summer window at the helm at The Valley.

The Blues suffered relegation on the last day of the championship. A four-match unbeaten run to end the season was not enough as they finished a point adrift of safety.

Ruddy, 37, was a regular at Birmingham City last season. He kept 11 clean sheets in 44 league games.

The former Norwich City goalkeeper has plenty of experience and in the 2022/23 campaign he kept 14 second-tier clean sheets for Birmingham City.

His contract at St Andrew’s expires at the end of this month and while the Blues have offered him an extension, failure to agree terms will see him leave on a free and the Addicks are planning a strike.

Charlton Athletic have reportedly opened preliminary talks with Ruddy as they look to tempt him to The Valley next season.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

A key member of the team

At 37, Ruddy would add experience to the dressing room, but not only that, he has shown that he is still capable of playing at this level.

The Addicks are looking to strengthen their goalkeeping position and on a free, this would be a very smart move.

The Addicks have also reportedly agreed a deal to sign Millwall defender Alex Mitchell as they hope to do their transfer business early and ensure the best possible pre-season.

Different expectations

Birmingham City would not have expected to be relegated to the third tier last season. The Blues looked like top six contenders at one point under John Eustace, but Eustace’s manic sacking saw him replaced by Wayne Rooney and it wasn’t long before they were battling above the drop zone.

New boss Chris Davies steps into his first job at the helm of a club after working in the backroom at Celtic, Reading, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

The pressure will be on to get immediate promotion back to the Championship, but they may do so without Ruddy.

Charlton Athletic’s Jones will just have to show improvement. The Addicks should at least challenge in the top half of the third tier, but to do so they will need to be much more consistent throughout the 2024/25 season.
