Leeds United are still owed money for an “unbelievable” player signed in the Marcelo Bielsa era

The 49ers inherited a huge credit card bill after taking over Leeds United from Andrea Radrizzani, and the club are still owed money for a player signed in the Marcelo Bielsa era.

Reports claim that Leeds owe a whopping £190m in transfer fees, although this is likely to be offset by the sales of Luis Sinisterra and Tyler Adams. All of this figure does not have to be repaid this summer.

Leeds have spent big over the past few years, bringing in the likes of Brenden Aaronson and Georginio Rutter, who together will cost the club a fee of £60m, although that is likely not yet paid.

The 49ers will need to sell a few players this summer to help reduce those costs, one of which, according to a report in Spain, is still due for a player signed in the Marcelo Bielsa era in the summer of 2021.

Leeds United still owe money for ‘unbelievable’ defender.

FC Barcelona Noticias compile a list of 15 players who are still owed money after agreeing contracts that will see the Spanish giants receive future payments and possible future incentives.

Junior Firpo is among the likes of PSV Eindhoven’s Sergino Dest, French defender Jean-Clair Todibo at Nice and Sporting Lisbon forward Franciso Trincao. Leeds are still owed money for Firpo’s arrival.

It is little surprise that Firpo features on the list, given that Leeds signed the Dominican Republic left-back in the summer of 2021 for a fee of £13m. He has played 84 times for Leeds in the last three years.

Leeds owe money to Firpo but the Whites could sell him in the summer

The defender is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract at Elland Road and there is a decision to be made. Firpo has attracted interest during his time at Leeds, even admitting it himself recently.

Leeds need to do one of two things this summer to avoid losing Firpo on a free. Indeed, letting Firpo walk for nothing in a year’s time will be a massive blow to Financial Fairplay, a huge loss.

So Leeds must tie Firpo down to a new deal, which seems unlikely given that “incredibly” Firpo will have suitors at the top level. Or, sell it this summer and bring in a fee, even if it still owes cash.
