Woman ‘discovers liver bird’ in northern lights that stunned Merseyside

A woman spotted a Liverpool landmark in the sky as the northern lights came to Merseyside last night.

An “extreme” geomagnetic storm has made the lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, much more visible than usual, according to a weather agency. At around 11pm last night, many took to the streets and shared images of the stunning UK night sky.

One of these was Claire Bland, who saw the aurora in Huyton. He saw what he thought was a liver bird in the dazzling colors.

Claire said: “When the northern lights know I’m in Liverpool I bring a liver bird!”

There have been sightings across Merseyside, including in Crosby, where ECHO photographer Colin Lane captured stunning images of the lights above the beach. After seeing the Aurora, Colin said: “They are mega guys, what a night…crazy colours.”

Stephen Dixon, a spokesman for the Met Office, said the lights could still be visible this evening. Speaking on Friday, he said: “Although the shorter nights will limit the window of visibility, there is a good chance of seeing the aurora, particularly on Friday evening and particularly in Scotland, Ireland and parts of northern England and Wales.

“There might even be visibility further south if you have the right equipment.

“Those conditions could continue into Saturday night, but we still need to work out some details on exactly where that will be.”
