Green Day at Emirates Old Trafford – stage times, acts, setlist and how to get there

Following an epic run of shows from Foo Fighters at Emirates Old Trafford last week, Californian punks Green Day have taken up the mantle as they head to the stadium as part of The Saviors Tour – a celebration of their fourteenth studio album .

The legendary rock band have played venues across North America and Europe this year, and on Friday (June 21) they’ll be playing some of their biggest hits for Manchester fans. It promises to be a “larger-than-life celebration spanning the career of one of the greatest musical acts of all time and some of the most important albums in history.”

Consisting of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, Green Day is best known for hits such as American Idiot, 21 Guns and Boulevard of Broken Dreams. They will be supported at the Manchester date by Nothing But Thieves and Maid of Ace.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Green Day’s 1994 Diamond-certified album Dookie and the 20th anniversary of 2004’s American Idiot. With The Saviors Tour, Green Day will bring their crowd the impressive catalog of hits, along with new additions from Saviors, which was released earlier this year.

Announcing the tour last November, Green Day said: “We’ve never been more excited to release new music than with Saviors, a record that’s meant to rock together. So let’s fight. I’m coming for a walk!”

Green Day had originally planned to tour in 2020 with Weezer and Fall Out Boy on the Hella Mega Tour, but the tour was postponed due to the pandemic. Other UK dates on the Saviors tour include the Isle of Wight Festival on June 23, Glasgow on June 25, Dublin on June 27 and London’s Wembley Stadium on June 29.

Who are the supporting documents?

Support for the UK shows comes from Maid Of Ace and special guests Nothing But Thieves.

Hastings-based Maid of Ace are a punk rock band made up of sisters Alison Cara Elliott, Anna Coral Elliott, Amy Catherine Elliott and Abby Charlotte Elliott. To date, they have released three albums and made several high-profile festival appearances, including Glastonbury in 2015.

English rock band Nothing but Thieves was formed in 2012 in Southend-on-Sea by Conor Mason, Joe Langridge-Brown, Dominic Craik, Philip Blake and James Price. In October 2015, they released their self-titled debut album, followed by their widely acclaimed second album, Broken Machine, which was released in September 2017.

Their third studio album Moral Panic landed in October 2020, while their fourth album Dead Club City, released last year, became their first No. 1 in the UK. Hits for the band include Amsterdam, Something On My Mind, Overcome and Welcome to DCC.

How to get to Emirates Old Trafford

Via Metrolink:

Fans are advised to travel to the show by public transport as there is no parking available at Old Trafford Cricket Ground – with the exception of accessibility parking which can be booked on the Emirates Old Trafford website. Those traveling by tram can reach Old Trafford tram station, connected to the Bury and Altrincham lines, which is right next to the ground.

Stretford, Old Trafford, A56 Chester Road and Altrincham Metrolink Line stations are all set to be busier as a result of the gigs, especially as there are big gigs in town on both nights at Co-op Live, where there are also parties. being encouraged to use the trams.

After the concert, fans can use Old Trafford station for journeys back into the city center and Trafford Bar for journeys south on the East Didsbury or Airport lines. The concert will finish at 10.30pm and the last tram from Old Trafford to the city center will leave at 1.08am and to Altrincham at 12.29pm. The last tram from Trafford Bar to East Didsbury will leave at 23:46 and to the airport at 23:31.

By car:

If you’re driving to the gig, be warned that Mancunian Way and Bridgewater Way towards Emirates Old Trafford will be extremely busy.

And after the show, Chester Road to the M60 and routes including Wharfside Way, Village Way and the Parkway to the M60 will also be heavily congested, with delays expected. Fans can park for free at the Parkway or Sale Water Park and use the Park and Ride services to catch the tram to Trafford Bar/Wharfside. Fans can also park at the Old Trafford football ground, but charges apply.

Taxis:

Taxi pick-up and drop-off will be Chorley Street – for northbound destinations – or Tesco Superstore on Chester Road for southbound destinations.

Will there be road closures?

Roads around the stadium (Brian Statham Way, Great Stone Road, Warwick Road and Talbot Road at the front of the ground) will be closed during the concert.
