Permission has been sought for car and electric vehicle charging facility off the M6 in Birmingham | News

Tyburn Road overhead FINAL

UK property developer Godwin Developments has submitted a planning application for a new electric vehicle charging and coffee facility on Birmingham’s Tyburn Road.

The proposed 1,840 sq m development comprises a purpose-built unit with indoor and outdoor seating, 20 parking spaces including four ultra-fast electric vehicle charging points, pedestrian access and associated landscaping.

Godwin Developments says the scheme will complement a future dedicated EV charging hub with 24 locations on an adjacent site, providing a valuable amenity for electric car drivers while they wait.

Located on the A38 and next to the M6 motorway, the proposed scheme sits alongside one of the main transport routes into the city, connecting Birmingham city center to the wider metropolitan areas to the north and east. The site therefore benefits from around 25,000 daily traffic movements as well as a sizeable local catchment area comprising Gravelly Hill Industrial Park, Fort Shopping Park and other nearby retailers.

It will regenerate vacant land previously used as builders’ merchants, contributing to the visual elevation and natural surveillance of the area, as well as providing improved pedestrian access and increased choice for consumers.

The company says the proposals will go beyond building regulation requirements, delivering almost a 28% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions achieved through energy efficiency measures and the use of renewable energy technologies, including roof-mounted photovoltaic panels, a heat pump with air for heating and cooling. , highly efficient construction fabric and LED lighting.

Simon Handslip, Managing Director of Commercial Development at Godwin, said: “We are delighted to have unveiled our plans for this retail scheme at such a prominent position on the A38 in Birmingham. A highly sought after retail destination, it is expected to serve not only through traffic and pedestrians using Tyburn Road, but also the local community, nearby industrial estates and numerous area retailers.

“This application is one of many similar commercial schemes we are currently progressing with well-known national and international brands. We have a huge appetite for similar sites nationally and are looking to partner with real estate and retail brands to showcase new road schemes associated with EV charging.”

When fully built and operational, the development will create 30 full-time and part-time roles, supported by employer-provided training.

Godwin was supported by professional experts RG+P, Simply Planning, HSP Consulting, The Engineering Practice, The Construction Consultants, ITP and Brindle & Green. EV charging stations will be operated via SMS.
