Everton are training for Sheffield United as youngsters get their chance and Seamus Coleman has made a decision

Everton are back in Premier League action on Saturday as they welcome already relegated Sheffield United to Goodison Park.

The Blues have long secured their top-flight status for next season with an impressive upturn in form at the end of the campaign, with wins over Burnley, Nottingham Forest, Liverpool and Brentford lifting them out of trouble. It means supporters should enjoy a stress-free final match.

The visitors have been miserable this season too. They are bottom of the table and have conceded 100 goals in their 36 games so far.

Makes a home win look very achievable for the Blues. Chris Beesley and Joe Thomas take a look at the XIs they would select as the team look to sign off their supporters for the year in style.

Chris Beesley – Dobbin has a chance

With Sheffield United visiting for the final home game of the season, I wondered if this was the time for experimentation, but Sean Dyche says he wants to pick a team to win and I’m inclined to agree.

Even after dropping their second points deduction appeal of the season, the Blues will need to do something to move 14th-placed Crystal Palace – they must win both of their remaining games, including a trip to title-chasing Arsenal on the final day and hope. The Eagles are missing out on both to have any chance – but with finances remaining in dire straits at Goodison Park and every league position counting in terms of prize money, they should do all they can to stay in 15th ahead of of Brentford.

Everton go into this match unbeaten in their last four games, with Dyche named the Premier League manager of the month for April, which is incredible considering they suffered a 6-0 thrashing at Chelsea at the halfway point and this correspondent should have warned the knee… jerks among fans of the madness that called for his head. Having won their last four at Goodison, I’d like to see the Blues maintain the momentum and retain the feel-good factor – at least on the pitch – heading into another crucial summer for the top flight.

So there are only a few changes for me. Lewis Dobbin starts on the right wing, hoping he can really get to a Blades defense that has conceded a hundred goals this term, while captain Seamus Coleman returns to lead the team ahead of what will be the first Season Appreciation Tour final at a packed Goodison since 2019, with Ben Godfrey moving to left-back ahead of Ashley Young.

I think today is a good day to experiment.

This summer is a big one and any lesson that can be learned in advance is valuable. Let’s start with Lewis Dobbin and see how he does. Can he be a true team player next season? Let’s start Youssef Chermiti, perhaps over Beto, so that both can get valuable minutes and give an insight into their acclimatization in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, there aren’t many opportunities to cut and change, but in this case, I still hope to see the youngsters get a chance from the bench. Mackenzie Hunt, Lewis Warrington and Jenson Metcalfe were all in match day squads – give them a few minutes.

And please start Seamus Coleman. It looks like his future is in his own hands, but while it remains undecided, it would be great to see him lead the team in a hero’s welcome today, just in case.
