Groundbreaking NHS staff ‘crushed’ by recognition in King’s birthday honors – South London News

By Kelsey McCabe

Two health professionals have been recognized in the King’s Birthday Honors list for their ground-breaking work in respiratory medicine and gynaecology.

Two members of staff from Guys and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust, Professor Jane Davies and Debra Holloway, have been awarded for their dedication to providing quality healthcare to the public.

Professor Davies, honorary consultant in pediatric respiratory medicine at the Royal Brompton Hospital in Chelsea and professor of pediatric respiratory medicine and experimental medicine at Imperial College London, Kensington, received an OBE for his ground-breaking research into the treatment of cystic fibrosis.

Throughout his career, Professor Davies has revolutionized treatments for people with cystic fibrosis.

Her research focuses on designing global clinical trials for innovative treatments, known as CFTR modulator drugs, which are the underlying genetic causes of cystic fibrosis.

These treatments are now licensed in the UK and are suitable for around 85 to 90% of people with cystic fibrosis, including a drug that can be prescribed to newborns.

Professor Davies said: “It is an incredible honor to have been nominated for this award by members of the cystic fibrosis community.

“Developments in clinical care over the last few decades mean that life for many living with this condition is longer and of better quality, but these advances do not benefit all people equally and there is more to do.

“I am privileged to work with passionate and dedicated colleagues in multidisciplinary clinical and research roles at Imperial College and Royal Brompton Hospital, my sincere thanks to them for their tireless teamwork.”

Debra Holloway, a recently retired consultant gynecology nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, has been awarded an MBE for 25 years of service to women’s health.

Mrs Holloway said: “I am delighted and honored to be awarded an MBE, so wonderful to be given this in recognition of my work in women’s health both inside and outside the Trust.

“I have been overwhelmed by the kind words that have been sent my way.”

A colleague, Claudia Tye, said: “Debra is a dedicated nurse with a passion for women’s health and improving patient care through advanced healthcare.

“She is revered nationally and adored by colleagues and patients for her enthusiasm and commitment to women’s health and her extraordinary kindness.

“This award recognizes her unwavering commitment to developing and raising the profile of specialist and advanced nursing.”
