Isles of Scilly’s new ship embarks on maiden voyage

A new ship to serve the Isles of Scilly has started its maiden voyage. Isles of Scilly Steamship Group’s (ISSG) new cargo ship Gugh left Penzance on Thursday 20 June on her maiden voyage to the islands, carrying her first load of cargo, including building materials and a boat.

The 22-meter ship is an echo of the group’s former cargo ship of the same name, which served as an inter-island launch between 1961 and 1991. The Gugh allows cargo to be transported directly to shore almost anywhere on any island.

She was built in Exeter by UK shipbuilder Coastal Workboats to specifications by renowned international shipbuilder Damen. Gugh is the fourth dedicated cargo ship in the ISSG fleet, working alongside its flagship cargo ship Gry Maritha, which operates on the Penzance to Scilly route, as well as Lyonesse Lady and Swift Lady, which serve outside the islands.

It will be docked in St Mary’s, is equipped with two cranes and has the capacity to carry 50 tonnes of cargo when fully loaded. The ship will have the capacity to carry up to 12 passengers, just like the Gry Maritha.

Stuart Reid, CEO of ISSG, said: “We are delighted to welcome Gugh into service. Not only does it give us extra flexibility with direct shore delivery, it will also increase freight capacity on the Penzance to Scilly route. Gugh will ensure that we can continue to provide an outstanding service to our customers.”

The addition of Gugh is part of Steamship Group’s new vessel replacement project. Earlier this year, the group also signed contracts for the construction of two new vessels that will enter service in 2026.
