The former Manchester City and Arsenal star explains how City gained the upper hand in the Premier League title

Former Arsenal and Manchester City full-back Bacary Sagna has highlighted where he believes the Gunners could end up losing the Premier League title race to City.

Sagna believes Arsenal’s inability to get the job done in either of their games against mid-table Fulham could be the crucial difference in their trophy quest.

Arsenal’s shortcomings at Fulham could decide the title race in Manchester City’s favour

Arsenal have picked up just one point from their two games against the Cottagers this season, while Manchester City won 5-1 at Craven Cottage. City will host the reverse fixture in Saturday’s midday kick-off.

Should victorious City – who have a game in hand – overcome Arsenal at least until Sunday night, Arsenal are set to visit Manchester United in the 4.30pm kick-off.

Sagna told Paddy Power: “It’s difficult to explain what Arsenal need to do to win the league – they have the quality in every position. They have been consistent and are having a great season.

“The only thing they might regret is that they lost to Fulham away and drew at home. For me, that was a turning point – they dropped big points in those two games.

“Arsenal are a top team but they ended up losing and drawing games they should have won. They were more mature, but those games will cost them dearly.

“They are still in contention; they managed to be up there and deserve a lot of credit. A few years ago, they were in the same position as Manchester United are today. The club is back to its best.”

If City fail to beat Fulham, it would put the title challenge back in the hands of Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta’s side boasting a superior goal difference.

Sagna believes claiming victory at Old Trafford is an absolute must for Arsenal in any case, saying: “It will be a difficult game for both teams.

“I watched the game last season – Arsenal were in control of the game and then they ended up losing.

“Arsenal can win against anyone. They have such great players, an amazing manager and they will do their best to go there and get the three points.

“They have no other option. They can’t afford to have a draw. It is better to start with a clear mind than not knowing whether to attack or defend.

“If Arsenal want to be champions, they have to win all their remaining games.”

City have a game in hand at Tottenham on Tuesday night before hosting West Ham United on the final day next Sunday. Arsenal’s last game is at home to Everton.
