Forecasters expect temperatures to peak next Wednesday (June 26). However, a high pressure breakdown from Tuesday night (June 25) into Wednesday could bring slightly unsettled conditions.

It will bring a chance of heavy showers and thunderstorms in places. The Met Office expects the most persistent rain to come in the south-west.

Dan Rudman, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “After a short and less settled interlude today and tomorrow, good conditions will return by Sunday and early next week. For much of the UK this will be accompanied by a rise in temperatures, with many places reaching the mid 20s.

“Some central and southern areas are likely to see temperatures approaching the values required for heatwave conditions. Heatwave conditions are set to remain in place for three consecutive days, and parts of the UK are likely to reach heatwave thresholds by early to mid next week.
