Leeds United asked to sell ‘replaceable’ stars for £13m

Leeds United have been urged to offload defender Junior Firpo this summer as the Dominican has now entered the final twelve months of his contract at Elland Road.

Failing to return to the Premier League, the West Yorkshire outfit will have to sell players to make up for any losses. The club has £190m in debt, with £73m of that due by the end of the month. While Red Bull’s minority stake in the club has certainly provided a welcome injection of cash, Leeds still need to make room in their wage bill.

The biggest name linked with a move away from Leeds United this summer is Crysencio Summerville. A number of Premier League sides have been chasing the Dutchman and his future at the club was always dependent on Daniel Farke’s side winning the play-off final against Southampton, which he failed to do.

However, there are a few players left over from the club’s time in the top flight who are on massive wages and could be shown the exit door before the start of the new season. Diego Llorente, Marc Roca, Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen still remain on the club’s books.

Another player from the team’s time in the Premier League is Firpo. The full-back moved to Leeds from Spanish giants Barcelona in 2021 for £13million. Unlike the others, Firpo went down with the ship, making 33 appearances under Farke last season and registering eight assists.

However, former goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes management must sell Firpo this summer to avoid losing him on a free within 12 months, which will not allow them to recoup the money they spent on him three years ago. Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said (quoted via Football League World):

“It’s a difficult one because a player has control when he has 12 months left on his contract.

“If the club can’t move him on and he won’t sign a new contract and he can leave on a free next summer, it’s not good for the club. The club needs to sort this out.

“The value of him staying for another season and helping the club get back into the Premier League, will he have enough of an impact in a Championship season to be worth the financial loss of selling him this summer? Is he replaceable? Yes, it is replaceable.

“If he’s not going to stay for more than 12 months and wants to leave for free, cash in now.

“If he’s made it clear he doesn’t want to stay and he doesn’t want to stay beyond next summer, cash in and get what you can now because he’s not going to have that big of a role in a premiership. Pushing the league.”

The writer’s vision

Signed for £13m in 2021, Firpo now has a market value of just £4.2m. If Leeds United don’t sell him this summer or can’t find a buyer to take him off their hands, that figure will drop to nothing in a year’s time.

The Dominican Republic international could still be a useful player for the Albi next season but is said to be on £60,000-a-week according to Capology, which is far too much for a Championship club to pay, more chosen that parachute payments are paid. reduced starting with the next campaign.
