Former Wanderers goalkeeper Andy Lonergan has taken up a player-coach role at Wigan ahead of next season in League One.

The 40-year-old, who played for the Whites between 2012 and 2015, was a free agent after a three-year spell at Everton.

Lonergan will now work with Sam Tickle and Tom Watson at the Brick Community Stadium and will also be eligible to play for the Latics.

He told the club’s website: “I’m really excited to be here. Shaun Maloney didn’t need to convince me because of the things I’ve heard about him as a manager and as a person.

“I’ve never met the gaffer before but from the first meeting I felt a really good vibe and he was someone I wanted to work with.

“This is my first coaching role. I’ve done a lot of qualifying and I feel I know a lot about goalkeeping, but to be a first-team goalkeeping coach at this age is incredible and the gaffer has shown confidence.

“Two top young goalkeepers coming through and to have that as a starting group for me is fantastic. I want them to start and help them get better every day.”

Wigan finished 12th in League One last season, despite starting the campaign with points deductions.

Shaun Maloney added: “I am delighted to welcome Andy Lonergan as our new player-coach. He is a brilliant character and is moving into an exciting new role following his departure from Everton.

“Andy has a wealth of knowledge to offer our young goalkeepers and will be a huge asset to our football club. I am very much looking forward to working with him and seeing how Sam Tickle and Tom Watson continue to develop under his guidance.”

Lonergan has also had spells with West Brom, Stoke and Liverpool in recent seasons, although he has not made a competitive appearance since December 2020.
