Derek Beaumont reacts to Leigh Leopards’ defeat to Leeds Rhinos

Leigh Leopards were beaten by an inspired Leeds Rhinos side 18-10 at Headingley as fans gathered to celebrate the life of Rob Burrow, including Leopards owner Derek Beaumont.

Derek Beaumont was among the 17,535 in attendance as Headingley enjoyed an emotional evening that began with an almost hour-long tribute and celebration of Rob Burrow’s life following his death nearly three weeks ago.

Burrow lost his battle with MND on June 2 and today marks the first home game for Leeds since then, while poetically coinciding with Global MND Awareness Day, a cause incredibly close to Rob Burrow’s heart.

The Sky Sports team, the fans, Leigh Leopards and of course Leeds Rhinos put on an amazing show of respect and love for Burrow, with those tributes almost replacing the importance of the match.

That said, there was a winner and a loser and losing owner Derek Beaumont has now reacted to the game.

Brodie Croft played like a man possessed as he inspired the Rhinos to victory with his first half brace setting the tone and despite Leigh pulling it back from 18-0 to 18-10 it was always meant to be Leeds Rhinos and Rob Burrow. night.

It’s something Derek Beaumont explained as he took to social media after the game to react to the event and celebrations as well as the game.

Beaumont posted: “Well played @leedsrhinos a thoroughly deserved win as you galvanized as a team on and off the pitch it will never be beaten on a night it was a privilege to have been a part of! #7RobBurrow would have been very proud of that effort which had his courage and conviction throughout.”

The defeat leaves Leigh Leopards in a very difficult position, with the club looking like they need nine wins from 13 to finish in the top six, an incredibly daunting proposition. As for Leeds Rhinos, they move back level on points with Catalans Dragons, but remain behind the French side on points difference.

It was revealed earlier today that the bookies had Leigh as favorites from the chasing pack to finish in the top six, but those odds are now certain to have increased following defeat to rivals Leeds.
