Coventry NHS Trust highest in the country for complaints of staff assaults

COVENTRY and Warwickshire NHS trust is among the highest in the country for complaints of staff assaults, according to new figures.

Figures from a LegalExpeert investigation show that over the past five years there have been 34 claims and incidents of staff bullying at the trust, with 23 claims settled for a total of £181,174.

Legal expert Patrick Mallon said something must be done to tackle abuse of NHS staff who are just trying to do their job.

Physical assault on NHS staff is defined as “The intentional application of force to the person of another without lawful justification, resulting in physical harm or personal discomfort”.

Data obtained through freedom of information requests to NHS Resolution (the legal body of the NHS) showed that Coventry and Warwickshire had the highest number of claims in the West Midlands.

The most recent NHS staff survey showed that around 14% of staff reported experiencing an incident of abuse in the last 12 months.

The ambulance sector is the worst affected, with almost 50% of paramedics experiencing physical abuse.
