Knighthead set up Chris Davies for two immediate goals for Birmingham City

Chris Davies is under no illusions that promotion is waiting for owners Birmingham City – and his long-term mission is to “take the club to the top”.

Knighthead have been bold in their ambitions since taking charge at the Blues 12 months ago and have made no secret of their desire to reach the Premier League. Relegation to League 1 is a setback, but the ultimate goal remains the same.

Tom Wagner insisted that relegation would not alter the club’s investment strategy and so it proved with millions spent redeveloping St Andrew’s and training grounds during the closed season. The success of a football club can be measured by a lot of metrics, but in the end, first team results are the be all and end all for some.

Davies said: “It’s very unusual to go to a club that has just been relegated and is investing in infrastructure and facilities like they are doing here. Even at this training ground, the work being done is a testament to their commitment and investment. It’s not talk, it’s real. When you see that, it’s really encouraging to me. Their future plans are really interesting.

“The owners said they want us to build a strong team first. There is a lot of work there. They want us to push and have the best chance to get back to the Championship straight away.

“That’s where everyone’s mind is right now. As I said at the beginning, we have to find that balance between being really uncomfortable and ambitious – to get out of League One but be humble enough to understand the challenge we face.
