Energy hack Martin Lewis helped a couple regain £600

A couple have revealed how a tip from Martin Lewis led to them receiving a £600 payment from their energy supplier. And the hack, from the recent MoneySavingExpert.com newsletter, could help millions more.

The team at Martin Lewis’ website highlighted the success story of Amelia, who took the MSE founder’s advice on claiming her energy credit. If you pay your energy bills by direct debit, your supplier will take your annual costs, based on your average usage, and divide it by 12 to calculate your monthly payments.

According to a post on the MSE website, this method smooths out your bills so you don’t face skyrocketing bills in the winter, when energy usage is likely to be higher. In essence, you accumulate energy credit in the summer and use it in the winter.

However, if your usage is lower than anticipated, then you can build up a significant amount of energy credit on your account, which you can reclaim if it’s too high.

However, that depends on what time of year it is. Martin Lewis, who recently shared advice for people going on holiday abroad, previously said that more than a month’s worth of credit on your energy bill in May – so two months – is too much and should be ask the supplier for some of it back, reports the Mirror.

For example, if your direct debit is £150 a month and you have a credit of £300 on your energy bill, then you should claim back £150. If you have less then you should keep the credit on your energy bill.

If you have less, then Martin previously suggested you may also want to increase your monthly payments to cover it.
