‘The best they’ve played for a few years’ – Adrian Lam praises Leeds Rhinos for honoring Rob Burrow

Leeds Rhinos and Leigh Leopards met on an emotional night at AMT Headingley yesterday as the Rugby League family came together to pay tribute to former Leeds legend Rob Burrow. In a fitting tribute to the Burrow, the two sides produced a pulsating display, resulting in an 18-10 Rhinos victory.

Leeds were inspired by a half-back display from Brodie Croft that Burrow would have been proud of. He scored two tries, the first a solo run which saw him beat several Leigh defenders and the second a full length dash where Croft showed lightning pace to leave the Leigh defense behind.

Leigh threatened to fight back and debutant Aaron Pene produced a magnificent display that was sure to give Leopards fans plenty to cheer about. Leigh fans also played their part in the magnificent tribute to Burrow, unveiling a huge banner in tribute to the former Leeds number seven.

Speaking after his side’s narrow defeat, Lam reflected on the night’s events.

After the match, Lam discussed Leeds’ victorious performance in his press conference on Leopards TV. He paid tribute to the way the Rhinos organized the tributes to Burrow and how the fans got behind the occasion.

He also believed the excitement of the night inspired the Rhinos to produce their best performance for a long time. Lam said:

“It was a magnificent night here tonight, well prepared and the fans come to support the cause and the tribute to Rob and I’m pleased for the club you know. I think the team came out tonight and probably played the best rugby they’ve done all year, so you know I’m pleased for them.”

Before adding: “With all due respect, I think it’s the best game they’ve played in a few years, to be honest.”

Their win moves Leeds back level on points with sixth-placed Catalans Dragons in Super League, with the French side still to play later today.

Lam went on to explain the unique emotions the game evoked given the extraordinary circumstances in which it was played. Although he was disappointed that his side could not get the two points, Lam was pleased for the Leeds fans and the Burrow family that the Rhinos were able to secure the two points.

He believes they have received some help from above to inspire them, both in attack and defence. Lam said:

“It was a bit of a rollercoaster really the emotions during the game. I’m pleased for Leeds though, I thought it was a really special night for the club and for the fans and for Rob and the family.

“You could see that reflected in the way they played. Lam stated.

“They defended really well and saved a couple of tries by keeping the ball over the line, so it looked like they had a little bit of extra help up top. So I’m happy for them. It was a great night for the club.
