Audi driver three times the limit caught speeding along residential street thought he was sober enough to drive

A bored man, driving after a day of drinking and a nap, thought it was OK to get behind the wheel – but he was three times the drink-drive limit. Leicestershire Police officers patrolling Rowley Fields Avenue spotted 55-year-old Gary Robson speeding down the road in the early hours of Tuesday, July 6.

Leicester Magistrates’ Court heard on Friday that the unemployed father-of-four had been drinking out of boredom the previous day and woke up after a short nap and went for a ride in his Audi Quattro. He was going 50 mph on a 30 mph road before he was pulled over.

Prosecutor Vishal Patel said police noticed a strong odor of alcohol from the car and that Robson also had slurred speech and glazed eyes.

Robson, of near Evesham Road in Rowley Fields, Leicester, failed a roadside breath test and was arrested and taken to a police station, where he gave a blood alcohol level of 105 microgrammes in 100ml of breath – three times the limit legal limit of 35 micrograms. .

Abigail Wright, representing Robson, said: “He suffers from anxiety. The day before, he consumed four to six cans of beer.

“He was going to bed, but he felt the need to go out. He thought that with the time that had passed and the sleep, he wouldn’t go over the limit. But he did.”
