The former Leeds United player has been linked with a move away from League Two

Former Leeds United manager Cameron Toshack has emerged as a potential candidate for the function of manager of League Two Newport County.

The Welsh side recently parted ways with Graham Coughlan after just under two years in the job, with chairman Huw Jenkins stating a change in direction for their next appointment.

Coughlan were 18th in League Two, 13 points above the relegation zone, after a run of eight defeats. consecutive at the end of the season.

The League Two side could now turn their attentions to Cameron Toshack, fittingly Give Sport.

Toshack and Jenkins previously worked together at Swansea City, the former a coach at the established club’s academy while the latter was chairman.

The 54-year-old began his coaching career in Macedonia as assistant manager to his father before leaving to take up a role at Swansea. He remained with the club from 2013 to 2019, in various roles within the academy.

Toshack then took on his first full-time managerial role, taking over as manager of Pafos FC in the Cypriot First Division. He remained with the team, receiving awards and recording the club’s highest winning percentage, before departing in 2020.

In 2022, he linked up with Jesse Marsch at Leeds United, where he remained until the American was sacked in February 2023.

A different approach for Newport County?

Toshack is highly thought of in the game, despite having little experience as a full first team manager, his coaching ability and connections are something that cannot be underestimated.

He is very much a development coach, which would be a similar designation that of Michael Skubala at Lincoln City. He has a proven track record of developing and improving players not just for his team but to be able to sell at a later date, which has been vital for survival in the lower leagues in recent years.

Jenkins has also seen his results first hand, so Vol he knows the capacity he possesses and he will know the results he can deliver, so while it may seem like a meeting out of the blue, for the president it is a calculated step in a different direction.
