The Hera Gallery exhibition carries the feminist mission into the future | Art and life

Sonja Czekalski, director of Hera Gallery, said the exhibition “Hera Gallery: Past & Present” and the anniversary march are a monumental event, as almost all the Women’s Cooperative Galleries that opened in the early 1970s have closed their doors, but Hera Gallery remains a thriving creative community in Wakefield.

“In this 50th anniversary year, we celebrate the women who made this space possible, the women who have carried the mission for 50 years, and inspire a new generation to carry on Hera Gallery for 50 years to come,” said Czekalski.

“Hera Gallery: Past & Present” will be on view from today until August 31. Tonight there will be an anniversary march around downtown Wakefield starting at 5:30 p.m. Marchers will leave the Hera Gallery at 5:30 p.m., making their way through Saugatucket Park to the site of the original Hera Gallery from Main St and return back to the High St location. of the gallery.

Czekalski said they will march behind Hera’s 50th anniversary banner, with masks, posters, and founding member Martha Cooper will present five large cut-out photos of the founding members to march through the streets of Wakefield in honor of their feminist legacy .

Following the march, Hera Gallery will host an opening reception from 6-8pm with refreshments.
