Report

Wigan Warriors Academy opened the scoring after 10 minutes when a cut back pass to Jaiden Drachenberg on the wing saw the winger cut in for the opener down the left flank. Nathan Lowe converted the score for an early 6-0 lead.

With both sides going set-pen-set, it wasn’t until the half-hour mark before the score was leveled and it was Wigan who crossed again. Jaiden Drachenberg put the ball in to bring the Warriors 10m clear before Charlie Yeomans sent a perfect shot up the pitch for Finlay Yeomans to gather in the air and into the ground in the goal. Nathan Lowe added the extras from close range and it was 12-0.

Almost immediately, Wigan were in again as Charlie Yeoman’s boot caused Wakefield problems again. This time a chip over the top was allowed to bounce before Reece Rowcroft crashed over. Lowe made a third straight conversion for 18-0 from outside.

Wigan had a final say in the first half as they scored in the last minute. A scrappy Trinity kick fell to full-back Noah Hodkinson, who got inside to break free and run the length of the pitch to score under the sticks, which Lowe improved once more to see Wigan 24- 0 in advance on return. .

Wigan continued their excellent attacking form in the second half, scoring again in the 43rd minute. After going close to the sticks, the ball was sent straight for Hodkinson to put Josh Cartwright into the right corner. Lowe couldn’t convert this time but Wigan were 28-0 up.

However, the guests responded in the 50th minute to get the first points on the board. Stephenson came close to going over, but the second play saw some lightning play from Staveley-Carr to get over the line. The effort was converted by Ratcliffe as Wigan held a 28-6 lead.

Just after the hour Wakefield got a second, Finnley Thompson got the ball in front of the sticks and despite Wigan’s best defensive efforts the Trinity player managed to sneak out of the tackle to ground the ball home. The score was added again from the tee by Ratcliffe for 28-12.

A quieter final 15 followed as Wigan held on after Wakefield’s late response to seal a 28-12 victory.
