  • FT | Wigan Warriors 36-0 London Broncos.

Zach Eckersley reflected on an enjoyable few weeks as Wigan Warriors beat London Broncos at the Brick Community Stadium.

The Warriors were back in action at home for the first time in seven weeks with more than 14,000 in attendance as the club celebrated the armed forces. The players and staff also lifted all four first-team trophies before kick-off, with the game marking their first game at The Brick Community Stadium since winning the Betfred Challenge Cup at Wembley.

“The crowd was amazing,” Eckersley said. “It was a really good turnout and they were with us the whole game, so all the energy was there. Obviously it’s been a while, but they were really loud and supportive tonight.”

While they were impressive in attack to register six converted tries on the night, the Warriors also dominated in defence, allowing zero points from their opponents. Eckersley, in particular, had a big say in keeping the Broncos clean when he made an outstanding try-saving tackle in the first half to strip the ball from Ugo Tison, whose field goal attempt proved to be a trial as a result. of the defensive effort.

“The guys defended well,” Eckersley said. “That’s always the main thing, defense first, and we got the free, so we were really happy with that.”

The win made it the fourth senior appearance in the bounce for Eckersley, who took up the challenge in the absence of fellow center Adam Keighran.

Reflecting on a busy couple of weeks, which included a try in the Challenge Cup final, Eckersley said: “I’m enjoying every moment and learning from the coaches. I’m trying to learn from Lockers (Sean O’Loughlin) and Tommy (Leuluai) as much as possible and obviously from Adam as well – he helped me a lot while he was out.

“I’m learning from everyone around me and I’m enjoying every moment I have on the field.”

The 21-year-old also highlighted the presence of Abbas Miski as a help during his run in the team, with the winger continuing to show his quality on the right with a try against London. “It’s really good,” Eckersley said when he had Miski by his side. “Obviously Abbas is an excellent winger and he is doing well at the moment. Also, given his experience, it’s great to have someone like Abbas out there.”

Looking ahead to an international break before returning to Betfred Super League action at home to Leigh Leopards in two weeks’ time, Eckersley said: “Obviously it’s international week next week so we’ll rest, recover and go against him again Leigh. We’ll train again and work hard again like we do and hopefully we’ll put in another good performance then.”
