One of Coventry’s oldest pubs and a must visit with a ‘fantastic’ selection of cheeses

A Coventry pub has been praised by diners for its ‘Olde Worlde’ feel. The Old Windmill is one of the medieval remnants of Coventry city center that survived the catastrophic Blitz of the Second World War and stands among Coventry’s collection of older buildings on Spon St as a reminder of what the city looked like.

While the 15th-century pub thankfully doesn’t serve 15th-century food or drink, one restaurant described it as a pub that “could be anywhere in Britain and would get rave reviews “. The menu includes a selection of cheeseboards, pies. , and ploughmen – all with locally sourced ingredients.

Wensleydale, white Leicester and various types of cheddar are on offer, while among the pies, a traditional pork pie sits alongside black pudding and a chilli one. A three-cheese meal will set you back £15, while a five-cheese meal costs £19. As for the pies, it’s a whole for £9 or a half for £5.

One diner said of the food: ‘Clearly thought has been put into the selection of fantastically sourced British/Continental cheeses. No plastic cheddar or bland supermarket Brie here!”

The result is a pub with a score of 4.5/5 on Trip Advisor, with other ratings including food (4.5), service (4.5), value (4.) and five points for atmosphere.

The Old Windmill has plenty of old charm, with three fireplaces, low ceilings and not a straight line in the building. The venue has also received praise for its variety of activities, from live music to a book club night every Wednesday.

It has also received its fair share of praise. In 2022 they were winners of the Great British pub awards and a finalist for Best Pub for Ale. They are also a past winner of CAMRA’s Pub of the Year, making it a haven for true beer purists.

The pub is located on Spon Street, in the south-west part of the city centre. Amongst all the old buildings that line the street, it’s a nice stop to admire some of the precious relics of Coventry’s ancient history.
