Sheffield United’s “vulnerable” makes his position clear against former Coventry City favorite Gustavo Hamer

Sheffield United want to keep hold of former Coventry City favorite Gustavo Hamer to help the Blades return straight to the Premier League following their relegation to the Championship.

Reports to the contrary have suggested the club are ready to listen to offers of £15m to recoup the midfielder they bought from the Sky Blues late last summer. United will brace for interest in some of their star names after dropping out of the top flight, with one or two key sales expected to make up for the revenue shortfall.

Rival clubs have also been credited with an interest in the likes of Anel Ahmedhodzic and Vini Souza, who are unlikely to see the prospect of a season in the Championship as part of career progression. Hamer was one of the best players in the Championship before being given the chance in the Premier League by the Blades after Sander Berge was sold to Burnley.

With five goals and seven assists to his name, he has been one of the club’s biggest creative forces in an otherwise forgettable season for the club.

Speaking about Hamer’s future, manager Chris Wilder admitted in Friday’s pre-match press conference: “There are certain players who may not want to be part of this journey, so we understand that and we have to be smart and make sure that we get value for money for those players who come out. There are players we want to keep and Gus is one of them. And Jayden (Bogle) is one of them, and so is Arblaster.

“We’re in a bit of a vulnerable position because of the finances involved in the Premier League, so I can’t sit here and categorically say they’ll be here for the next five years. I just don’t think it happens like that, and that’s the case with most clubs in the Premier League, never mind a team that has had a disappointing season and will find themselves in the Championship next season.
