REAL Employment Help the young man get a job

by Joshua Robinson –

A young man called Timwho is autistic, was able to find a job with support from REAL employment.

Tim was referred to REAL Employment from Project Search, Huddersfieldand previously worked as an apprentice in Kirklees Council Finance department. After Tim’s job coach observed him in the role, she realized that Tim needed some support because he was good with spreadsheets. However, Tim needed support for non-work related issues – things that neurotypical people take for granted.

Tim had to deal with invoicing and phone calls in his role and his job coach helped him when communicating as a council employee. Occasionally he would get calls from angry customers, and Tim found the problem. With his coach, they talked about examples of how he should handle these demands.

Tim struggles to understand complex meanings, so new expressions and words with meaning must be introduced to avoid Tim’s stress. Tim’s coach spoke to his manager and it was agreed that Tim would have a place to sit and think and was given noise canceling headphones.

Following his experience in the finance department, Tim interviewed for several jobs and was successful in one of the roles, and Tim’s new manager is now supporting him in this role.
