Passengers stranded at Manchester airport, flights cancelled

Thousands of passengers are facing flight delays and cancellations at Manchester Airport after a power outage brought the UK’s main airport to a standstill.

PUNCH Online reports that this was revealed on X by the airport, #manairport in a statement on Sunday.

The two-phase update was titled “Passenger Power Outage Information: Update.”

Manchester Airport management said the main buildings affected were Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 and that Terminal 3 was still operating but there could be delays.

“Following the power outage that affected Manchester Airport and the surrounding area earlier this morning, passengers due to travel from Terminals 1 and 2 are advised to contact their airlines before arriving at the airport as a number of flights would could be cancelled.

“Power has been restored and we are working to get those passengers already at the airport on flights as soon as possible.

“We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this. Our customer service and resilience teams are working hard to keep airport passengers updated, along with our airline colleagues.

“Passengers flying from Terminal 3 should arrive at the airport as usual, although flights are subject to delays,” the document said.

According to the statement, all passengers are advised to contact airlines for updated information before coming to the airport.

“Passengers due to travel from Terminals 1 or 2 today are advised to contact their airlines for updated information before arriving at the airport.

“Passengers due to fly from Terminal 3 should arrive at the airport as normal unless advised otherwise by their airline, but may be affected by delays.

“We apologize for any inconvenience and aim to restore normal service as soon as possible.”

PUNCH Online reports that the incident has sparked outrage on social media.

One person wrote: “Total shame, the airport should have backup systems/generators for this type of scenario. Expect the unexpected.

“Overall, this airport is a disaster and needs major investment. I don’t see how a power outage causes a toilet block on T1. The management should resign.”

Meanwhile, a Manchester Airport spokesman said: “A significant number of flights today may be cancelled.

“The advice is that passengers expecting to travel today should not come to the airport without first checking with the airline.”
