Wests Tigers beat Canberra Raiders Adam Doueihi LAchlan Galvin who won 48-24. upset

The Wests Tigers beat the Canberra Raiders 48-24 at Campbelltown Stadium to end round 16 of the NRL season with a bang.

Wests Tigers representative Stefano Utoikamanu told Fox League before the game that he “wants to be known in my career as a winner”.

If he and the Tigers perform as consistently as they did in the first 60 minutes of Round 16, then Utoikamanu will get to be a reality. The young prop was huge in his side’s victory, capping the performance with a try in the 52nd minute.

Much was made in the pre-game about the difference in experience between the two teams, with Canberra’s starting front row boasting almost 500 games of experience.

And for much of this game it felt like boys against men, although boys played like men and men played like boys.

A young Tigers side blew Canberra away early in the game, scoring the first try in the third minute. 18-year-old debutant Luke Laulilii grabbed his first NRL try in the 10th minute as the Tigers dominated proceedings until Sione Fainu crossed in the 34th minute.

Summing up how young this Tigers outfit is, Fainu, Galvin and Laulilii each scored the first try of their young 11-match careers, Galvin the most experienced player of the trio.

This game could have been put to bed until Fainu went down, with the Tigers having three tries disallowed in the first 26 minutes of the game.

Benji Marshall’s side played with an energy and spirit that has been missing for much of the season, as if they all had a chip on their shoulders and a point to prove. For most of the game, they made their point loud and clear.

In a sea of inexperience, it was Api Koroisau, Aiden Sezer and Stefano Utoikamanu who really stepped up when the Tigers needed them.

At the Fox League break, Koroisau and Sezer received plenty of praise from Premiership winner Michael Ennis.

“The Tigers offense was great. I think Api back at hooker and Sezer back at attack made the difference,” Ennis said.

Tries from Galvin Jahream Bula, Utoikamanu and Koroisau in the opening 17 minutes of the second half looked to have buried the Raiders, the Tigers free-flowing attack resulted in some what some would describe as miraculous tries in the second 40.

Galvin’s second was especially pleasing for Tigers fans, with the young team switching from inside their own half to third tackle, stripping the Raiders for numbers on the edge and running 70 yards to score.

It was an ordeal with Marshall’s fingerprints all over it. After an hour, this looked to be as comprehensive and comfortable a win as any in recent memory for the Tigers – with shades of the Titans’ 66-6 victory over the Warriors.

However, Alex Seyfarth was sent off in the 62nd minute, opening the door for Canberra to fight their way back into the game.

It didn’t take long for Ricky Stuart’s side to do so, with Nick Cotric heading into the right corner two tackles after Seyfarth was blocked.

Two minutes later, Kaeo Weekes burst through the Tigers’ left defense to run in and score his team’s third of the night before halves partner Ethan Strange scored from a Xavier Savage rebound.

Tigers fans at Campbelltown Stadium and at home could be forgiven for having sweaty palms and a racing heart, but perhaps the most nervous man on Earth was Seyfarth.

Down 42-24, a Raiders comeback was unthinkable, though not impossible.

An Adam Doueihi interception in the 73rd minute almost secured the two points for Wests Tigers. It capped off a good performance from the centre, who has had a terrible run with injuries of late.

Doueihi was heavily involved in the Tigers attack, switching both sides of the field and defending Matt Timoko extremely well to the point where the Canberra center only broke one tackle all game.

Doueihi’s first try since round one of 2023 was enough for the Tigers to pick up the two points and make it two wins on the trot, with Canberra now reeling and wondering where their season progresses from here.

After such a comprehensive result, could this be the project for the Tigers?

They have tried big name signings in recent years, but this team of local juniors and inexperienced youngsters signed from elsewhere played with as much energy, spirit and skill as any Tigers team in recent memory.

WHAT I LEARNED

ADAM DOUEIHI CONVINCES AFTER LONG LAY OFF

Recovering from knee reconstruction is never easy. To come back from three and play your first NRL game in over 400 days is a herculean task. Especially considering who was tasked with marking Adam Doueihi.

Heading into round 16, Canberra’s Matt Timoko averaged four tackle breaks and 147 meters per game. Against the Tigers, with Doueihi in front of him, Timoko broke just one tackle and ran 90 metres.

Of course his side were dominated for much of the game, but Timoko’s performance was a sign of how well Doueihi performed in his first game in over a year.

As someone who made a name for himself as a strong ball running back or five-eighth, Doueihi’s defensive side of the game was impressive against the Raiders – and gave the returning star a solid foundation to build on.

Set up a try for Sione Fainu in the first half after appearing on the right side of the pitch, which he did on several occasions.

Undoubtedly, the highlight of the night came in the 73rd minute. With the Raiders heading for a nervy finish for the Tigers, Doueihi intercepted a Jordan Rapana try and slotted past Kaeo Weekes to score his side’s final try – one that sealed the victory for the Tigers.

Speaking on Fox League coverage, commentator Andrew Voss described Doueihi’s try as “a miracle. A miracle in both the medical world and the rugby league world.”

TIGER WINS BATTLE BETWEEN TWO STAR STARTERS

The two front-runners for this season’s Rookie of the Year award in Lachlan Galvin and Ethan Strange went head-to-head and there was a clear winner at Campbelltown Stadium.

Galvin was sensational for the Tigers and while Strange had some nice moments, it was mostly a forgettable afternoon for the Raiders.

The Tigers rookie was everywhere during the 48-24 win, scoring two tries, setting up another, running for 111 meters and recording five tackles.

Galvin has had to deal with a lot of speculation about his future with the Tigers amid the JV’s struggles this season, but it looks like he’s going nowhere just yet.

“I want to try to turn this club around and be a West Tiger,” Galvin said after the game.

That should be music to the ears of Tigers fans, who have finally seen their team show some promise of late after two straight wins.

Meanwhile, strangely, he scored a try himself, but made some poor errors in a game where most of his team struggled.

At this point, you’d have to say Strange has the lead in the Rookie of the Year chase, as he’s been much more consistent than Galvin this season, but the Tigers pivot certainly bounced back on Sunday.

FANTASTIC NEW CHILDREN – Matt Cleary (NCA Newswire)

The latest addition to ‘Benji’s Babes’, 18-year-old Luke Laulilii, enjoyed a dream debut when he came out of the fake half, 10 meters out and charged through the retreating Raiders defense to score.

Born in Campbelltown Hospital, Laulii was part of the 2023 Australian Schoolboys team alongside teammates Lachie Galvin and Heath Mason (who was in game number two).

Laulii is the first player born after 2005 to play for the club and the sixth player to play in the NRL from the Tigers’ Harold Matthews class of 2022.
