Five unanswered questions that Tenerife police are trying to solve about Jay Slater

The desperate search for missing Jay Slater continues into its seventh day. The apprentice bricklayer has not been seen since the morning of Monday, June 17.

Jay, 19, was on holiday in Tenerife when he went missing. Despite a huge search on the Spanish island, he has yet to be found.

It is understood he was last seen walking alone when he left a rental property for what amounts to an 11-minute walk to his accommodation. His way back to the south of the island would have taken him through rugged, isolated terrain.

The last known location of his phone was in the Rural Park of Teno, a mountainous nature reserve where search teams have stepped up their efforts. But his movements after about 8.30am on Monday are unknown, reports Express.

Family and friends flew to Tenerife to help with the search. Here we look at some of the unanswered questions about his disappearance.

1. Who was the mysterious person his mother said was seen with him?

Jay’s mother Debbie Duncan, 55, said someone claimed to have seen her son walking with two men on the evening of Monday, June 17. Jay was last seen that morning asking about a bus going back to southern Tenerife.

Debbie said: “Someone came in to say they saw someone they thought was Jay coming back down the road, he was sitting on a bench. He was with two men who looked a little worse for wear and they were near a church, this guy has visitors and he told the police about it and they are looking into it.

“We don’t know for sure if it was Jay, but it’s a start. They said it was around 6pm, which is ten hours after he was seen by the village lady. But if it was him, what was he doing there, and who are these two men?”

2. Where did he go after he was last seen?

The last location was traced to Rural del Teno, a mountainous area in the west of the island. The nearest city is Santiago del Teide.

Jay had been staying in the south of the island in an apartment with friends. He is understood to have called a friend and said he was lost but had been trying to make the 11-hour journey back.

Friend Lucy told the Manchester Evening News: “He went out one night, he went to a friend’s house, someone he met on holiday. One of the people he met rented a car from here, so he drove them. back to his apartment and Jay went there not realizing how far it was.

“He ended up in the middle of nowhere. Jay obviously thought he could get home from there.”

3. Is there any reason why he could have been kidnapped?

Jay’s mother, Debbie, believes that she may soon be ‘entwined’. She wondered how the apprentice mason could have gotten lost in such a crowded area.

Debbie said: “But if it’s lost, then why hasn’t anyone seen it? It’s busy with hikers and tourists up there, so if it got lost then someone would have seen it, so that’s why I think maybe it was lying around somewhere. “

Debbie also recounted how scruffy Brits with “Northern accents” called her on hidden numbers, claiming they had her son and were keeping him because he owed them money. Police could not verify whether Jay is being held captive.

4. Why didn’t Jay wait for a bus or make other travel arrangements?

According to friend Lucy, Jay dated two other men. One of them drove Jay in his rental car to another part of the island.

The teenager then missed the bus back, crossing into the rural, mountainous area as he tried to make the return journey on foot. His phone died around 8:50 a.m., his last known location being recorded near a hiking trail, a few hundred meters above the village of Masca.

Lucy got a call from Jay on Monday morning, saying he was trying to take a long walk back through a mountainous area after spending the night with other friends. He told her he was thirsty and his phone battery was at one percent.

5. Did Jay leave the country?

Authorities have yet to confirm information suggesting that Jay has left Tenerife completely. But that is unlikely to be the case.

The nature reserve, Rural del Teno, is remote, rural and doesn’t have the infrastructure for Jay to get to the airport quickly. The rental property where Jay stayed before he disappeared is “miles from civilisation”, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Mom Debbie also said she has Jay’s passport. A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has been reported missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”
