Jürgen Klopp has angered Anthony Taylor after Liverpool’s defeat as the referee suffers UEFA relegation

A disallowed goal during Holland’s 0-0 draw with France certainly got Premier League fans fired up on social media on Friday night. A shot from Xavi Simons was controversially ruled out for offside by Anthony Taylor’s assistant referee Adam Nunn. The decision was made thanks to the position of Denzel Dumfries, which ensured that French goalkeeper Mike Maignan could not save.

A lengthy VAR check from Stuart Attwell did not lead to an overturn, prompting some people to jokingly apologize on X (formerly Twitter) for challenging English officials from the rest of the continent during Euro 2024. With however, the call appeared to be the correct one, with Dumfries clearly interfering with play.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk didn’t see it that way. “I scored a goal which is a fair goal,” he said after the game. “He (Maignan) had no chance to get into that corner. But yes, the English referee decided to disallow it.” The opinion of van Dijk’s former manager Jürgen Klopp on the decision is unknown, but he has certainly expressed his displeasure with the official in question in the past.

To be fair to Taylor, he wasn’t Klopp’s least favourite. He once told Paul Tierney that he “has no problem with any referee but you”. However, the German’s comments after Liverpool lost 3-1 at Arsenal in February suggested he was no fan of Taylor either.

“A lot of things went against us today,” he said. “This referee gave me a red card against Man City for the fighting situation between Bernardo Silva and Mo Salah. Today, the same situation with (Diogo) Jota, but he didn’t get a red card.”

“It’s unbelievable, then (Kai) Havertz’s hold on (Ibrahima) Konaté for the first yellow card,” Klopp continued. “Then Havertz goes down and the referee gives a yellow card to Konaté. Gabriel (Magalhaes) does the same for (Darwin) Núñez and no yellow card.”
