Work is to begin on the £10.3m town center improvement scheme

From July 1, work will begin on the Holmfirth Town Center Access Plan, a £10.3m investment scheme to create a more accessible center for businesses, residents and visitors.

Initial work begins at Huddersfield Road Car Park, where the existing market and walkway will be replaced with a community events space where markets and events will take place throughout the year, attracting visitors and growing the local economy.

There will also be electric vehicle points, car parking facilities, widened walkways and pavements, new curbs and improved drainage.

Pavements will be resurfaced which to improve safety in the city centre, the Victoria Street pedestrian crossing will also be signalised, alongside better street lighting, signage and signage.

David Shepherd, strategic director for growth and regeneration at Kirklees Council, said: “Holmfirth is a beautiful town and a fantastic place to live, visit and spend time.

“The Holmfirth Town Center Access Plan will give longevity to the area, modernizing Holmfirth’s unique offer whilst embracing and celebrating the town’s famous heritage.

“Once complete, the city center will be much more accessible and enjoyable for all, as we continue to help local businesses thrive and boost the local economy, while improving congestion, travel times and encouraging active travel.

“This scheme is a collaborative effort by the community, the council and the Combined Authority to create a brighter future for Holmfirth.”

Holmfirth Town Center Access Plan is a partnership project between the council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

It aims to help reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions by prioritizing sustainable transport options such as walking, cycling and public transport, while supporting the growth and development of the cultural sector.
