Three striking elements about the Airbnb where Jay Slater went missing

The rental property where missing Jay Slater stayed before he disappeared was the focus of the search for him. The secluded Airbnb called Casa Abuela Tina is located just outside the village of Masca in northwest Tenerife.

Apprentice bricklayer Jay is understood to have stayed there before disappearing on the Spanish island. The 19-year-old has been missing since the morning of Monday, June 17.

Jay is believed to have gone to the rented property with two other Brits he met at the NRG music festival he had been to. The owner of the unit was the last person confirmed to have seen it.

She recalled seeing Jay as he left after asking about bus times. He had intended to return to the south of the island, where he had been staying with friends.

But she is said to have missed the bus and decided to make the journey on foot – believed to be an 11-hour journey, the Mirror reports. Jay – from Lancashire – contacted a friend to say he needed a drink and only had 1% battery on his phone on Monday morning.

His phone died shortly after and he hasn’t been heard from since. Here are three noted factors about Airbnb accommodation.

Remote location

The holiday home is located halfway up a mountain just outside the town of Masca. It’s about an hour’s drive from the popular resort of Los Cristianos – where Jay and his friends had booked an apartment.

With only one road leading in and out of the area, getting to the property is no easy task. It seems that only a handful of tourists venture off the beaten track to visit the village, most of them going on pre-booked tours.

There are two restaurants within reasonable walking distance and only one bus stop with services that run between 60 and 90 minutes – but only to Santiago del Teide and Lomo de Masca. For those who walk, there are few marked paths or trails in the surroundings.

Challenging terrain

Navigating the area is incredibly difficult if you are not familiar with the surroundings. The roads are very steep, narrow and winding.

A 15-minute drive down will take you into Masca, but venturing further would require some form of road transport; whether by car, taxi or bus. Jay is said to have left the rental house and headed up the hill, heading further north to Tenerife.

The next significant village they would encounter is Las Portelas, a journey of about two hours on foot, involving mountain hiking and navigating difficult roads and paths.

Limited accommodation

The rental is not in a bustling resort full of hotels, apartments, shops and restaurants. Instead, it’s discreetly tucked away on the side of a road – so discreet you could easily miss it.

With stunning views of the rolling landscape, the accommodation would be perfect for families or those who have hired a car and are familiar with island hopping. There are only three other hotels within a 7km radius of Masca – which is where search teams are currently looking for clues to Jay’s whereabouts.
