£16.9m bid tabled by Nottingham Forest for Leeds United player, response yet to be provided

Premier League side Nottingham Forest have tabled a £16.9m bid to sign a player from Leeds United ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a new report this weekend.

Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe has already confirmed that the club must sell players this summer. It comes after reports Leeds owe £190m in player transfers and the need to comply with Financial Fairplay.

Players such as Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray, Ilia Gruev and others have been linked with an exit this summer. Marathe even left the door ajar for Gray’s possible sale, which would anger Leeds fans.

But one player expected to leave Elland Road in the coming weeks and months is Willy Gnonto. The international tried to leave the Yorkshire club last summer, refusing to play three games.

Nottingham Forest table £16.9m bid for Leeds United player

Indeed, Gnonto, 20, did not feature against West Bromwich Albion and Birmingham City and in the Cup against Shrewsbury Town. But he returned to the fold under Daniel Farke, initially as a fringe player.

In January, he was one of a number of players to make the squad alongside Gruev, Junior Firpo and Patrick Bamford. He was first choice in the second half of the season, scoring nine goals for Leeds.

But he has failed to live up to the initial hype surrounding the Italian 13 times in the Premier League. There is a belief that Gnonto is capable of much better and now Africa Foot say Forest have submitted a bid.

Forest are not the only club interested in signing Gnonto from Leeds

It is claimed that Forest have offered £16.9m to sign Gnonto and are “very interested” in luring the Italian to The City Ground this summer. Leeds have yet to provide a response, but a decision is expected very soon.

Forest are not the only club said to be interested in signing Gnonto. The player is said to be keen to return to his home country, with boyhood club Inter Milan keen to add a homegrown player.

Whether Forest is a good move for Gnonto remains to be seen. He will face plenty of competition for playing time from the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi, Nicolas Dominguez, Anthony Elanga and other key Forest stars.
