Power cut at Manchester airport triggers disruption

Manchester Airport was forced to cancel and delay dozens of flights after the hub experienced a “significant” power outage over the weekend.

The airport said in a statement on Sunday: “Following the power outage… which caused disruption to Terminals 1 and 2, we are now in the process of resuming operations and expect flights to resume for the remainder of this afternoon and evening .

“We are also working closely with airlines to reschedule canceled flights in the coming days. Flights scheduled for tomorrow should not be affected and passengers due to travel should plan to arrive at the airport as usual.

“We thank passengers for their patience and our resilience team and customer service colleagues for their hard work.”

Chris Woodroofe, managing director of Manchester Airport, added: “There was a power surge in our electrical system due to a fault early this morning which damaged some critical equipment for departure security and our departure baggage systems.

“That meant Terminal One and Terminal Two were unable to take off aircraft … and as a result we had no aircraft capable of landing as arrivals because there is no space to park those aircraft on the airfield.”
