Will there be more aurora borealis tonight? The best places to see them in Yorkshire

People across Yorkshire were stunned last night by the sight of the Aurora Borealis, which appeared in the sky due to a geomagnetic storm.

But many will be gutted that they missed seeing the iridescent night sky. So with that in mind we’ve put together a list of some of the best locations in Yorkshire to check out the phenomenon as it has the potential to return tonight and on Sunday.




The best tip for seeing the Northern Lights is to look for high, open spaces with low light pollution. That would appear to be the best advice as the Met Office has predicted “low clouds, mist and fog” to spread across the sky this evening (Saturday 11 May).

The tip is also to look towards the northern horizon and be prepared to wait for hours to see the beautiful view. Here is a list of selected locations from the issue:

  • Emley Moor Mast, Huddersfield
  • Rose Topping, North Yorkshire
  • Ilkley Moor, West Yorkshire
  • Whitby Abbey, North Yorkshire
  • Holme Moss, Holmfirth
  • Dovestones, near Holmfirth
  • Stoodley Pike, Todmorden, Calderdale
  • Tan Hill Inn, Yorkshire Dales.
  • Buckden National Park Car Park, North Yorkshire.
  • Malham, North Yorkshire.
  • Hawes National Park, North Yorkshire.
