Manchester Airport reopens but delays continue

Manchester Airport has reopened after a power outage forced two of the three terminals at the UK’s busiest airport outside London to close on Sunday (23 June).

The airport reported that it expects the airport to be busier than normal and has put in extra staff to keep up with demand. It is not yet known from the airport what caused the power outage or why backup systems were not in place.

Inbound flights were diverted to other UK airports, with flights from Singapore and Texas landing at Heathrow and Gatwick, both over 200 miles (320 km) from MAN.

Following the outage in the early hours of Sunday morning, dozens of outbound flights were canceled and passengers who managed to escape through the terminal which still had electricity often found they left without checked bags as delivery systems luggage at the airport were offline.

“We are working with airlines to ensure passengers are reunited with their luggage as soon as possible,” the airport said in a statement. “We apologize for any inconvenience. Your airline will contact you regarding the process of receiving your baggage if it is delayed.”
