Saracens vs Bristol Player Ratings

Saracens player ratings live from Ashton Gate: This Round 17 meeting promised to be a winner with six-in-a-row Bristol hosting five-in-a-row Saracens. Those hot streaks had this set up before the start as a fifth vs fourth fight.

In the end, it was the Londoners who were cheering from the rooftops after their emphatic 41-20 success that put them through to the semi-finals with a game to spare, next Saturday’s game against Sale. Here are the Saracens player ratings:

15. Elliot Daly – 8
Elegantly played throughout. A very sure pair of hands behind that refused to budge. Look at his determination to win a race back and deny Bristol a late consolation. He also took over the kicking duties from Owen Farrell midway through the first half to score 16 points from a possible 18, his only miss coming from a post.

14. Rotimi Segun – 7.5
He has shown how much he has matured in recent times, making some decent carries and closing the door defensively with intelligence. He completed his wonderful effort with a wonderful try in the 62nd minute with his team, a short yellow card.

13. Lucio Cinti – 7.5
A shrewd talent for making important interventions. See his handling which led to the 28th minute penalty that brought Saracens back to 13-all. Then marvel at the wheels he showed breaking out of his own half to set up the bonus-point try for Juan Martin Gonzalez.

12. Nick Tompkins – 8
He brought nasty value to the party, repeatedly rushing Bristol’s defence. He even tried his hand at scrummaging with his team shorting some yellow forwards.

11. Tom Parton – 6
Probably the quietest Saracen player on the park in the submission that he saw the small ball but was stuck at the other end with the tackle to prevent Gabriel Ibitoye having an influence.

10. Owen Farrell – 8.5
With his brother Gabriel captaining Old Belvedere to U13 Leinster Cup glory at Donnybrook last Sunday, he had to step up to reclaim family bragging rights, he did so to a tee, opening a wonderful box of tricks. He enjoyed himself immensely in one of his final games for the club, producing numerous highlights – including a 50-22 howitzer from his own 22.

9. Ivan van Zyl – 8
The only change to the backline from last time’s win over Bath, he has a few problems early on, such as his penalty not rolling, giving Bristol the invitation in the 22 to create the opening try. However, he eventually settled and his energy was important in his 67-minute stay.

1. Mako Vunipola – 7
One of the three starters promoted from The Rec bench, along with Marco Riccioni and Hugh Tizard, it also took some time to settle as he was awarded a scrum penalty and a pass that went just out of reach. However, I was stuck after that.

2. Jamie George – 7.5
Looked as game as ever, running support lines off carriers in traffic. His leadership helped Saracens through the first half, but he was one of four forwards to make way when his side were reduced to 13 for eight minutes into the second half.

3. Marco Riccioni – 6.5
After looking mortified sitting in the background as the Billy Vunipola arrest incident unfolded in Mallorca, he endured a brutal start here when he was kicked back in the ass when he was hit by Benhard Janse van Rensburg’s kick. He was left lying in further agony as Bristol made their way over for the opening try. His day could only get better from there, and it did.

4. Maro Itoje – 8
Cleared to play after a cited case from Bath was dismissed, the Bristol staff called for yellow cards at two points in the first half. They succeeded in the second half, Itoje being booked in the 50th minute for catching the big Steve Luatua and not coming back after being run off. Until then, though, he has two first-half tries to his credit, scores that were crucial to Saracens’ dogged grip.

5. Hugh Tizard – 7.5
Set the tone with an early big tackle on Magnus Bradbury on the halfway line, going on to rack up an impressive number of involvements before becoming one of the gang’s 53rd-minute hanging four.

6. Juan Martin Gonzalez – 9
Arguably the best Premiership signing in 2023/24. He arrived with an already high reputation from London Irish but was different in Saracens colors and was a thorn in Bristol’s side after failing to stop Joe Batley scoring early on. In the first half, when the hosts were still in the lead, there was a vital penalty and a line steal. He then continued to show his attacking class, combining to help Itoje score the first of his pair and then getting his own, the try that secured the 66th-minute bonus. He finished with 23 tackles.

7. Ben Earl – 7.5
A curious situation in that he was the least impressive of the Saracens starting line-up, but still played very well. His best moment of the first half was collecting a Bristol line-out turnover on the stroke of half-time. He was booked on 52 minutes for an offence, but when he returned he was similarly blocked to make up for his 10-minute absence.

8. Tom Willis – 8
Third game in a row he got the selection jump on Vunipola and you could see why. It was his worm-like bearing that brought Saracens close to the line for Itoje to squirm at the recycle. There was also a big tackle on Ibitoye near half-time, one of 22 tackles made in his 71 minutes. He’s proven to be another smart McCall’s shopper this season

Substitutes – Aled Davies (68), Billy Vunipola (71) and Alex Goode (76) were token cameos, but the rest of the substitutes helped Saracens avoid the potential crisis of being temporarily down to 13 players. Eroni Mawi epitomized the impact of the forward five – the four who came on in the 53rd minute and then Theo McFarland in the 61st – as it was the first loosehead carry that tempted Bradbury to concede and secure the three Daly points that gave them allowed 29-20. .
