Bristol Rovers are likely to sign Dawson from Sheffield Wednesday

Bristol Rovers are set to sign Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson on a free transfer this summer, according to The Star.

Bristol Rovers are preparing for another year in League One this summer.

The Gas finished 15th last season in the third tier and will be hoping for improvement this season.

Sheffield Wednesday avoided relegation last season. Danny Rohl has turned the club’s fortunes around and the German boss has his share of the sights ahead of the season ahead.

Dawson, 28, played 18 league games for the Owls last season. The goalkeeper kept four clean sheets in the middle of the campaign before returning to the bench for the run.

The long-serving Sheffield Wednesday man kept 13 clean sheets in 22 League One games last season and a move to the third tier appears to be on the cards.

His contract is set to expire at the end of this month and Bristol Rovers are likely to land him on a free transfer.

End of an area

Dawson has been at Hillsborough since 2013. He has been a familiar face in the Owls dressing room for over ten years and now his time at the club is coming to an end.

The 28-year-old still has a lot of time left in his career and is still capable of playing consistently at this level, so Bristol Rovers get a good signing here.

He adds experience as well as talent and for free he’s a good deal.

He will be reunited with Bristol Rovers boss Matt Taylor, who he knows from his season-long loan at Exeter City, where the pair won promotion in 2021/22.

A new chapter

Sheffield Wednesday enter a new chapter this summer.

Rohl and his team have all the momentum they need behind them at the moment, and their summer business has been exciting so far.

There is still work to do for Sheffield Wednesday, but the early signs are promising and it wouldn’t be surprising to see them climb towards the top half of the second tier this season.

Bristol Rovers will be looking to do the same in League One and Dawson would help them on their way.

Both clubs will want to see improvement this season, but the Owls are the side to watch at present.
