The former Sheffield United man is available this summer for £14m

Former Sheffield United striker Cameron Archer could return to the EFL this summer as Aston Villa attempt to raise funds to comply with the Premier League’s PSR rules.

Archer joined the Blades last summer for an £18million fee, but following the team’s relegation, Aston Villa exercised a buy-back clause in his contract which has now seen the striker return to Villa Park. The buyout was reported to be worth the cut price of £14m.

Sheffield United are closing in on signing the 26-Cap International

The 22-year-old played 29 times for Sheffield United last season, scoring four goals and adding one assist. While encouraging for a young striker, this form probably does not indicate he is ready to be part of a Champions League side as Villa prepare for life in Europe’s elite competition. Instead, as reported by Football Insider, the Midlands club are open to offers for Archer and he is expected to leave Villa Park during this transfer window.

There could be plenty of Championship clubs interested in a deal for the young striker as he is no stranger to scoring goals in the second tier. Archer previously scored seven times in 20 games while on loan at Preston North End in 2022 and 11 goals in 23 games during a spell with Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough in 2022/23.

While there would be expected to be plenty of interest in Archer, there may be a problem in securing a move away from the club as Aston Villa try to hold out for the maximum fee.

The former Sheffield United man is available this summer for £14m

Football Insider revealed in June that the club must raise £60m this summer to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules. And with Ian Maatsen coming in for a fee of at least £37.5m, they are already playing to catch up.

The sales of the likes of Omari Kellyman to Chelsea and key midfielder Douglas Luiz to Juventus could help balance the books, but if they want to add more to the squad they could wait for a bigger offer for Archer later in the window, which could Well, leave the former Sheffield United man in the dark for the next few weeks.

The writer’s vision

Cameron Archer is a goalscorer, there’s no doubt about that, but after a turbulent year of a big-money move that didn’t pay off, he finds himself back in the box, looking for a way out of Villa Park. If one of the most financially affluent clubs in the Championship is in need of a striker this summer, he could be a great option.

Wherever Archer ends up this summer, he’ll want it done as soon as possible, as his next move feels like a big one in his still-young career. If he gets it right, he could be in the conversation for the Championship Golden Boot come May. If not, he could suddenly become a surplus striker in the second tier, something not many would have predicted a few years ago as he scored so consistently for Aston Villa’s youth teams .
