Sheffield Wednesday are ‘pushing’ to sign the striker they wanted in January, but there’s a problem

Sheffield Wednesday are back in the market for a striker after Ike Ugbo returned to Troyes.

The Owls were desperate for some attacking additions in January and the arrivals of Ugbo and Ian Poveda have proved vital in their bid to avoid relegation.

Sheffield Wednesday are still keen to bring Ugbo back to Hillsborough but are believed to face “fierce competition” and a hefty price tag if they want to land him permanently.

While the club are believed to be back for Mika Biereth, it is also believed to be a tough pursuit as Sturm Graz are keen to offer him Champions League football.

Sheffield Wednesday ‘push’ for Duncan McGuire

Wednesday could now look to further January targets in Duncan McGuire, with The Athletic reporting they are now “pushing” to sign him this summer.

The report claims the Yorkshire outfit are one of the Championship clubs interested, as well as a couple from Italy.

Although McGuire came close to joining both Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers in January, it is believed that Orlando City really do not want to sell him.

The 23-year-old scored 13 goals in 32 games last season, while he continued his impressive form with six goals in 16 games this time around as well.

Owls need to push harder

McGuire could still be a very good signing for Wednesday and it became abundantly clear that the striker wants a move to the Championship during the January saga.

However, they will face stiff competition for his signature and will have to be willing to make sacrifices if they are to win the race.

However, this feels like the situation with every scorer at some point, and Wednesday will not find anyone suitable if they are afraid to spend money.

Ugbo, Biereth and McGuire are all very good options for the Owls, but what they don’t want is their reluctance to get them to land someone like Dwight Gayle on a free transfer.
