A ‘stupid’ teenager threw himself in front of the car in Narborough Road on a dare

A court heard that “complete and utter stupidity” was to blame for an incident where a drunken teenager dared to throw himself in front of a car on Leicester’s Narborough Road. The driver was passing the Ivy Road intersection when Kalen Dean swerved into the center of the southbound lane, where the car collided with him.

Dashcam footage from the Toyota Corolla was shown at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Friday. Dean, dressed in shorts and a hoodie, could be seen and heard slamming into the car’s windscreen after jumping backwards onto the bonnet as the car moved.

After being arrested by Leicestershire Police, Dean was charged with causing criminal damage to the car, which he admitted during the court hearing. The court heard the car belonged to a taxi driver who had to pay for the bonnet and windscreen to be repaired and also lost money due to him not being able to work before it was repaired.

Jagvir Sangherra, representing Dean, told the court: “On the date in question he was intoxicated when he dared to do it and he went and jumped on a car and he is lucky to be alive. total stupidity and drunkenness at the time.

“He is very sorry for what happened and is very grateful to still be alive.”

He said his client was a “young man who has a number of mental health issues”.

Dean, of Liberty Road, Glenfield, Leicester, already had previous convictions and was on an 18-month community order at the time of the incident, which happened at 8.30am on Thursday, February 9. The court heard Dean still had 192 hours of unpaid work outstanding from that order.
