Dolev Klein Harari of Cornwall receives a $120,000 Schulich Scholarship

A young Cornwall businessman has been awarded a prestigious $120,000 Schulich Leadership Scholarship from Queen’s University, where he will study engineering this fall with a focus on entrepreneurship.

Dolev Klein Harari was eligible to be one of the 100 Schulich Leaders this spring in Canada because he is still just finishing high school. The 17-year-old is in the 12th grade and part of the class of 2024 at Holy Trinity High School.

“When I heard (about being a Schulich Fellow), I was like, ‘oh wow, oh shit, wow,'” said Klein Harari, who already in his young life started two companies, the first being a tea seller with bubbles a year ago.

“I made money from it,” he said.

Klein Harari, with the help of the Cornwall Summer Company program, has now started Business Software Solution and, looking to the longer term, his aim is to graduate from Queen’s in a business he has already started.

“I have a good idea what type of (business) to focus on,” Klein Harari said, but you’ll have to wait a few years for a follow-up story on exactly what that is.

Klein Harari used the B-word when discussing his long-term plans, as in a business with a billion-dollar valuation—and few at Holy Trinity who knew him would bet on that happening in -one day.

At the Catholic School District of Eastern Ontario’s final board meeting last week for the 2023-2024 year, Klein Harari was one of five recipients of a certificate of achievement, with CDSBEO presenters saying he stands out as a visionary among his peers, that , as a STEM student lead, mentors peers in virtual reality, 3D printing, coding and robotics.

“His academic humility encourages collaboration with both peers and faculty, making STEM more accessible to the school community,” reads part of the citation, with the CDSBEO saying his diverse portfolio extends to student council, sports teams and justice initiatives social.

In regards to Holy Trinity’s Class of 2024 celebration, Klein Harari is both beneficiary and donor. He’s giving back even before he leaves the halls of HT by presenting what will be the first annual Flight Flock Leader Award to a 12th grader who is dedicated to creating an inclusive, encouraging and highly entertaining senior year for their fellow Falcons .

Klein Harari will receive $5,000 from the prestigious George T. Kaneb Scholarship Fund, awarded each year to two Cornwall high school seniors entering university in the natural or computer sciences or engineering.

“There is no niche for Dolev, he wants to learn continuously,” Holy Trinity Principal Nancy McIntyre said. “Reflecting on his time here, he took advantage of so many of the opportunities available (at HT) and there was a ripple effect. Students (colleagues) took an interest in what interests him and does not hesitate to share his knowledge, ideas.

“He has given so much back to the school community and the board.”

Three years ago, Klein Harari along with his mother and younger brother immigrated to Canada, coming to Cornwall from the small Israeli town of Gan Yavne, an hour west of Jerusalem and not far from the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

McIntyre remembers Klein Harari well with his mother coming to register at HT; “He was so excited, he did his research and we were very happy to have him,” she said.

Mindy Gibbs, in her first year as senior advisor, nominated Klein Harari for the Schulich Scholarship, and the chances of receiving one are high—there are more than 300,000 high school seniors who are eligible, and each year there are about 1,500. nominated for the scholarship.

The 100 annual STEM scholarships are awarded to entrepreneurially minded high school graduates enrolling in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) program at 20 partner universities across Canada. SHulich leaders can devote their full time and attention to their studies because all their financial needs are covered during their bachelor’s degree, making it more likely that they can make decisive contributions to society.

Scholarship program founder Seymour Schulich of Montreal is among Canada’s leading philanthropists, having donated more than $350 million to various causes, with efforts focused largely on education and health care centers across the country ; AGrowing up with financial need, Schulich was fortunate to receive a life-changing scholarship to attend McGill University’s first Master of Business Administration course in 1965.

Klein Harari also represented the local community at the Canada Wide Science Fair this year, winning gold in Ottawa for his project, The Schizophrenia Software Solution, using artificial intelligence to diagnose the severity of schizophrenic episodes. This makes it two years in a row that he has gone to nationals at the fair, last year in Edmonton for a project that featured areas of significant earthquake damage in Israel.

In April 2021, The student from St. Lawrence Affaan Ali became a recipient of a Schulich Scholarship; scholarships have been presented for over a decade.
