The local hospital held its annual long service recognition dinner last Wednesday, where 31 staff were celebrated for their commitment to local healthcare.

Combined, the group has provided “an incredible 865 years of commitment and hard work to the hospital and the patients and families it serves,” hospital officials said in a statement.

“Our wonderful people are the heart of Brockville General, and this special event is a celebration and appreciation of all they do to provide the best health care experience for our patients,” said Nick Vlacholias, president and CEO, in a communicated.

“We thank them for their unwavering commitment to the hospital and the leadership and mentorship they provide every day to their teams. At a time when younger staff are starting careers in healthcare, the experience of our long-standing staff and doctors is more invaluable than ever.”

The annual recognition event recognizes staff with 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 years of service.

The night of celebration included a special recognition of Dr. Harvinder Chawla, one of the lead pediatricians in the women’s and children’s program at the hospital, who celebrated 50 years at the hospital this year.

“When it comes to providing exemplary care, the career of Brockville General Hospital pediatrician Dr. Harvinder Chawla it truly is all in the family,” hospital officials said in a statement.

During her 50 years in Brockville, Dr. Chawla cared for thousands of local babies and children, including multiple generations of the same families. Hospital officials said some of the babies she helped deliver went back to have children of their own and then became grandparents when their children gave birth to a new generation.

“I’m surprised, I didn’t expect all this. It is a great honor and I am very happy,” said Dr. Chawla following the award ceremony.

Looking back on half a century of caregiving, she smiled and said, “There are a lot of babies, a lot of phone calls night and day — at all hours.”

She said she always wanted to be there for new parents, and even though she already has half a century under her belt, she has no plans to retire just yet.

“I’m still healthy, so I’ll work,” she said.

As is tradition, in addition to recognizing staff for years of service, the hospital’s Team Member of the Year and Team of the Year were also announced at the event.

Kati Crowley, rehabilitation assistant, and Winston Francis, facilities supervisor, shared team member of the year honors, while the hospital’s 12-member department received the team of the year award.
