Lying driver fined £1,400 after paying someone to ‘deal’ with her speeding tickets

A lying motorist has been fined £1,400 after she was caught paying someone to ‘cheat’ her speeding tickets. Warwickshire Police say the 25-year-old woman, who has not been identified but is from Slough, tried to avoid paying two speeding tickets.

But her dishonesty ended up costing her more – £1,400 in fines. Warwickshire Road Safety Unit (WRSU) said the woman had paid someone to provide false and misleading information about who was driving.

However, the WRSU, which processes speeding tickets in the county, rejected the drivers’ nominations after inquiries could not verify the existence of the “drivers”. They say he was given the chance to provide the correct details but never responded to the correspondence.

When the case was taken to court, she pleaded that she had provided details of the driver and did not know why the police were taking her to court. But when the case was heard at Coventry Magistrates’ Court on June 10, the prosecutor described the evidence gathered as “exceptional”, which included a comparison of the handwriting of the two “drivers”.

Despite the defendant having legal counsel, the prosecutor said the weight of evidence was stacked against her and the defendant ultimately pleaded guilty to failing to identify the driver when required.

As a result, she was fined £810 and given six points on her licence. The woman was also ordered to pay £250 costs and a £324 victim surcharge.
