Leeds school ‘jumps’ Ofsted with its incredible transformation

A Leeds school previously in ‘special measures’ has been transformed, earning the Ofsted ‘good’ seal of approval.

Ten years ago John Smeaton Academy, in Stanks, was placed in Special Measures by Ofsted. And the secondary school in Leeds has been rated either inadequate or requires improvement every time Ofsted inspectors have visited since.

When the Government asked the GORSE Academies Trust to take over the school in 2021, the school was plagued by long-standing problems including poor exam results, high staff turnover, bad behavior among some students and years of entrenched failure.

But following the school’s first inspection since he joined three years ago, John Smeaton Academy was rated Good in all areas, with Ofsted describing the turnaround as “amazing”.

Inspectors said the school had become “a beacon for its community”, with well-behaved pupils, believing staff and high ambitions in all areas of school life. Ofsted says students at John Smeaton Academy are now ‘thriving’.

Headteacher Andrew Moncur said: “I am delighted with what has been achieved at John Smeaton Academy. Ofsted’s report is superb. But it confirms what we already knew – that this is now a very good school.
