The Met Office explains how long Britain’s heatwave will last – and when the next one will be

Birmingham looks set to sizzle with highs of 28C in what the Met said will be a “very hot day” with “lots of summer sunshine”. Although Tuesday will be pleasant, forecasters have now issued a verdict on when the current heat wave will end – and when the next one will hit.

National meteorologists and the UK’s Health Safety Agency predict the hot weather will last until at least the end of the week. However, by Thursday (June 27) there will be increasing cloud with a chance of rain.

Friday and Saturday should be “bright and breezy” but “mainly dry with plenty of sunny spells”. Although the end of the week will “remain warm”, temperatures will be “cooler than in recent days”.

Mark Sidaway, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office said: “While we expect to see some very warm temperatures this week, it may not be the wall-to-wall sunshine and blue skies that people are expecting as there is likely to be some cloud in places. Some areas, mainly central and eastern England, will experience temperatures exceeding heat wave criteria.

“However, to be officially recognized as a ‘heat wave’, the temperature must be reached for three consecutive days. While we’re looking to enjoy some nice warm temperatures, the weather this week doesn’t look particularly exceptional or extreme.”

Starting in July, the Met Office predicts temperatures will be “slightly above average”. However, in the middle of the month, there is “a slightly higher than normal chance of heat waves developing”, according to the long-range weather forecast.
