Abattoir expansion plans divide opinion in Arley – read comments | Coventry Live

Arley’s abattoir expansion has attracted a substantial backlash from Coventry Live readers, who have lodged more than 300 objections with North Warwickshire Borough Council. They claim the abattoir has undergone a sea change – no longer a small, family-run business, but an industrial-scale operation wreaking havoc on the village with foul smells and disruptive traffic.

An agent representing T&S Abattoir Ltd, which runs the facility, submitted a retrospective planning application to the local council for approval of the extension work already being carried out. Residents have raised their concerns, claiming the abattoir has grown from a “small, family-run” operation under previous ownership to an “industrial-scale” operation.

Severn Trent attended the scene after concerns were raised about “discharges” posing a possible risk to nearby waterways; however, the company has confirmed that the issues are now fixed. “Waste is the tip of the iceberg,” claimed one local. The abattoir is currently operating under a license from the Food Standards Agency (FSA), which local authorities say is investigating the matter.

Reader Li10 said: “Coming from a family that has lived in the village all their lives, this abattoir has completely changed from the previous owners. From a family-run butchery/slaughterhouse where you could buy local produce from local farmers to industrial-scale production supplying businesses miles away.”

“This is on a completely different scale and is hugely disruptive to our little village, from the smell of sheep carcasses, sometimes not collected for days or so, to the size of lorries trying to maneuver three-point turns on the small lane, during the hours they work. Now we can’t enjoy our outdoor space and we suffer from the odors inside our homes. This cannot be right and cannot continue.”

Commentator Olddj58 wrote: “It’s easy for people to dismiss and even joke about the plight that residents have to go through on an almost daily basis. However, it is no laughing matter. In addition to the increase in the number of trucks coming at all hours of the day and night, there are odors coming from the premises that directly affect the people who live in the area.”

“When you’re told by your daughter that she’s not ready to visit us with our grandchildren if she smells, that’s such a powerful statement. So the board needs to act on that.”
