Ashley Young agrees new Everton deal as Kevin Thelwell explains role

Ashley Young has signed a new contract with Everton.

The 38-year-old said there was a problem when the decision was made, which will extend his stay at the Blues by 12 months.

The veteran professional has repeatedly signaled his desire to stay after the club offered him a new contract at the end of the season, and confirmation of this will add further depth to Sean Dyche’s squad heading into the next campaign.

Young became Everton’s oldest debutant last season and made 34 appearances as his versatility proved crucial for Dyche last season. News of his commitment to the club means another player has been secured after Everton triggered an option to extend Idrissa Gueye’s contract and Seamus Coleman signed a new deal. Midfielder Tim Iroegbunam has since been added to the squad, while the return of Jack Harrison on loan from Leeds United was confirmed on Monday.

On confirming his new contract, Young said: “I spoke to the manager before the end of the season. He asked me what I wanted to do, if I wanted to stay, and I immediately said yes, because I enjoyed my time here. Kevin (Thelwell) was the same. The size of the club, the staff, the players and of course the fans, who have been excellent… I’ve enjoyed my time here, but I can see how big the club is and where the club wants to go, I want to be a part of that.

“I’d put it up there with the best dressing rooms I’ve been in, with the best team spirit. There’s a bond there. You can tell the players have been here for a while, players who have played under the manager, players who I know the club – just a real union. Everyone is so united, not just the players but the staff too.”
